Microchipping Your Pet

How It Works:

A microchip is a permanent form of identification that your pet will never lose. The microchip itself has no internal energy source, so it will last the life of your pet. The chip is read by passing a microchip scanner over the shoulder blades of your pet when the pet is found. The scanner emits a low radio frequency that can detect the unique code from the chip implanted in your pet.

According to a study conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association, dogs that are microchipped are 2.5x more likely to find their way home and cats who are microchipped are 20x more likely to find their way home. Having your pet microchipped, along with a collar and tag identification, will greatly increase your chances of being reunited with your pets.

Availability:

Microchipping is generally available by appointment at Toledo Humane Society. The cost of a microchip is $25.00 and includes the activation of the microchip through 24PetWatch.
